Linda Greenlaw
Seaworthy: A Swordboat Captain Returns to the Sea
Friday, July 9, 2010 at 7:00pm

Linda Greenlaw's lobster traps weren't paying off, her truck was on its lasp gasp, and bills were piling up on the table when an old friend offered her a captaincy on his boat for a season of swordfishing. She hadn't been blue-water fishing for ten years, since the great events chronicled in The Perfect Storm and The Hungry Ocean, and she was ready to ditch land life and return to sea. But she was also ten years older, had new family responsibilities and ties, and found herself torn between the normality of life ashore and the incredible high of deepwater fishing. She took the bait, of course, and thus opened a new chapter in a life that had already seen enough adventure for three lifetimes.

Linda Greenlaw, America's only female swordfish boat captain, lives on Isle au Haut, Maine. She was featured in the book and film The Perfect Storm and in the Discovery Channel series Swords: Life on the Line. She has written three New York Times bestselling nonfiction books about life as a commercial fisherman and two mysteries, and has coauthored a cookbook with her mother, Martha Greenlaw.

Baker Books is located in Dartmouth, a suburb of New Bedford on Buzzards Bay in the southeastern corner of Massachusetts.

What is Gyotaku?

Gyotaku is an art form that has gained recent popularity in the USA. The fish rubbing process known as Gyotaku, began two thousand years ago in the Orient. The basic method remains relatively simple. Artists apply paint or ink to an actual fish, then lay paper or canvas on top of it. The paper or other media is rubbed over the fish and gently peeled off to expose the likeness. The technique allows for a truly accurate image of all the details in each fish.
